Getting There

Design by Sharon Powell.

Getting There is an original Australian musical written by Chris Gordon, primarily around the songs of Pat Drummond along with two songs by Geoff Drummond and one by Chris Gordon.

The songs of the Drummond brothers evoke a truly Australian tone while the narrative unifies the songs into an old-fashioned, feel-good musical set in contemporary Australia.

The central character, Matt, is being bullied at school and is allowed a week off to work at the school’s booth at the Royal Easter Show. There, he meets Julie, a country girl, and the boundaries of his narrow perspective of a city-based life become unlocked.

While away from school, something terrible happens to his best friend, for which he blames himself, and Matt takes flight from school, his family, from Julie… from everything. The story picks up six years later when a family problem causes him to return back to the life he left behind. Can he face his past, and can he make amends?

The story includes contemporary topics such as bullying, job insecurity and the difficulties of life on the land, set against the themes of standing up for yourself, the diversity of Australia, finding where you belong in life and the enduring nature of love.

The title can be taken on several levels… the physical place we aim to be, the metaphoric sense of life being a journey and the quintessential Australian attitude… equal parts optimism and pragmatism… that accepts we don’t have all of the answers, that life isn’t perfect, but we’re working on it. We’re getting there.

PREMIERE

Getting There had its world premiere in Goulburn at the Goulburn High School from August 3 to August 18, 2018 and received very positive feedback from audiences. It struck a chord with its positive message, its terrific songs that ranged from Aussie pub rock to folk and country, and story elements facing Australians today.

The musical is available for hire and would suit theatrical companies looking for a uniquely Aussie show. For those interested in staying up to date on the show’s own ongoing journey, you can: Join our Facebook Group Join our Mailing List Contact Chris Gordon for details about hiring/performing the show.
