Vox Populi

Sometimes the voice of the people struggles to be heard.

Vox Populi is a new play that deals with a range of political and societal themes that seem all too real at the time of writing.

With one week remaining before the next Federal Election, Prime Minister Luka Zelig must come to terms with the likelihood of a substantial political loss as a result of the weight of progressive policies she has ushered in during her term in office.

Following that near-certain electoral defeat, faced with an incoming new prime minister set to institute tyrannical control through initially gradual changes then escalating changes, Luka has to decide how far she will go to stand by her principles, and what effect that will have on the people around her.

The play deals with the increased polarisation of binary politics, the manner in which freedoms can be forfeited imperceptibly over time, the manner in which news is reported, how news is being commoditised, and how easily people will surrender democracy and justice when they are offered comfort for their fears.

Amongst it’s themes are:

  • The polarisation of politics where people become comfortable demonising people just because of where they fall on the left-right political spectrum.
  • How the Left can be blind to financial control and people who want everyone to take accountability for themselves.
  • How the Right can be blind to the need to assist minorities and those less lucky in life.
  • How quickly ultra conservatism and fascism can take root.
  • How dystopias like 1984 aren’t preset, but happen gradually like the proverbial frog in hot water then never jumps out even as it starts to boil because the changes were gradual.
  • How the media, politicians and advertisers frequently claim to speak with the voice of the people, and that inevitably the voice of the people remains with the people.

Written by Chris Gordon in 2025, the play is looking for a home and a production team, and the author and show supporters are hoping it may have it’s international debut in 2026.
